Nyai Roro Kidul

Also known as Ratu Kidul, Kanjeng Ratu Kidul

Nyai Roro Kidul, or Ratu Kidul, is the spirit queen of the Southern Ocean in Javanese belief, associated with the Indian Ocean off Java's south coast. Javanese court tradition holds that Panembahan Senapati, founder of Mataram, took her as a spiritual consort, and the rulers of Surakarta and Yogyakarta claimed a continuing mystical bond with her. She remains a prominent figure in Javanese folklore and court ritual.
