Jerash

Also known as Gerasa

Jerash, the ancient Gerasa, is a city in northern Jordan whose Roman ruins are among the best preserved in the Middle East. A member of the Decapolis, it flourished from the 1st to the 3rd centuries CE, with colonnaded streets, an oval plaza, theatres, a temple of Artemis and an arch built for Hadrian's visit in 129–130. It later had many Byzantine churches and declined after the earthquake of 749.
