Amman
Amman is the capital and largest city of Jordan. As Rabbah, or Rabbath Ammon, it was the capital of the Iron Age kingdom of Ammon; the Ptolemies refounded it as Philadelphia, and it became a city of the Decapolis with a Roman theatre that still stands. It was a small town when Abdullah made it the capital of the Emirate of Transjordan in 1921, and it has grown with successive waves of refugees since 1948.
