Gadara
Gadara was a Hellenistic and Roman city of the Decapolis on a ridge above the Yarmouk valley, at modern Umm Qais in northern Jordan. It was famous as a centre of learning, the home of the satirist Menippus, the poet Meleager and the philosopher Philodemus. Its ruins include theatres, a colonnaded street and baths, built in local black basalt and limestone.
