Johan van Valckenburgh
Johan van Valckenburgh (c. 1575–1625) was a Dutch military engineer who designed fortifications for several northern European cities. Between 1616 and 1625 he surrounded Hamburg with a ring of bastioned ramparts and moats, behind which the city stayed neutral and unoccupied throughout the Thirty Years' War. The line of these works survives in the green belt around Hamburg's old town.
