Johann Friedrich Böttger

1682–1719 · 18th century

Johann Friedrich Böttger was a German alchemist held at the court of Augustus the Strong, who expected him to make gold. Working with Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus in Dresden, he produced Europe's first true hard-paste porcelain around 1708–1709 and became the first administrator of the Meissen porcelain manufactory founded in 1710. He also developed a fine red stoneware known as Böttger ware.
