John Fenwick (Quaker)

1618–1683 · 17th century · Also known as John Fenwick (colonist)

John Fenwick was an English Quaker and former Parliamentarian soldier who bought Lord Berkeley's half of New Jersey in 1674 together with Edward Byllynge. Disputes over the purchase, which came to be held in trust for Byllynge's creditors, led to the creation of West Jersey under William Penn and other trustees. In 1675 Fenwick led settlers to the Delaware and founded Salem, the first permanent English settlement in West Jersey.
