John Hanning Speke
John Hanning Speke was a British army officer and explorer of East Africa. On Richard Burton's expedition he reached Lake Victoria in 1858 and identified it as the source of the Nile, a claim he set out to prove with James Augustus Grant in 1860–63, travelling through Karagwe and Buganda to the lake's outlet. He died in a shooting accident in 1864, on the eve of a public debate with Burton.
