John William, Duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg

1562–1609 · 16th century

John William was the last Duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg, ruling from 1592. He suffered from mental illness, and his court was torn by factions. His death without children in 1609 set off the War of the Jülich Succession between Brandenburg and Palatinate-Neuburg, which threatened a European war before the duchies were partitioned.
