William, Duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg

1516–1592 · 16th century

William, Duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg, known as William the Rich, ruled the United Duchies on the Lower Rhine from 1539. His claim to Guelders led to war with Emperor Charles V, who forced him to give it up by the Treaty of Venlo in 1543. He rebuilt Jülich as a Renaissance fortress town, and his sister Anne of Cleves married Henry VIII of England.
