Treaty of Xanten

1614 · 17th century · Part of the War of the Jülich Succession

The Treaty of Xanten was signed on 12 November 1614 to settle the War of the Jülich Succession, which followed the death of the last duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg in 1609. It divided the inheritance between the two main claimants: the Elector of Brandenburg received Cleves, Mark and Ravensberg, and the Count Palatine of Neuburg received Jülich and Berg. It gave the Hohenzollerns their first territories in western Germany.
