Treaty of Wuchale
The Treaty of Wuchale was signed on 2 May 1889 between Menelik II of Ethiopia and Italy. It recognised Italian control of the Eritrean highlands, but its Italian and Amharic texts differed over Article 17, which Italy read as making Ethiopia an Italian protectorate. Menelik rejected this reading and denounced the treaty, leading to the First Italo-Ethiopian War and Italy's defeat at Adwa in 1896.
