Jón Sigurðsson

1811–1879 · 19th century

Jón Sigurðsson was an Icelandic scholar and politician who led the nineteenth-century movement for Iceland's self-government from Copenhagen. As president of the Althing he pressed Denmark for home rule, and the constitution of 1874 granted Iceland control over its own affairs. The Republic of Iceland was proclaimed on his birthday, 17 June, in 1944, now the national day.
