Jonah, Metropolitan of Moscow

d. 1461 · 15th century · Also known as Saint Jonah of Moscow

Jonah was a Russian churchman elected Metropolitan of Kiev and All Rus' by a council of Russian bishops in Moscow in 1448, without the approval of the Patriarch of Constantinople. His election, made after Moscow rejected the union with Rome agreed at the Council of Florence, marked the beginning of the de facto independence of the Russian Orthodox Church. He supported Grand Prince Vasily II and was later canonised.
