Jupiter (god)

Jupiter was the chief god of the ancient Roman state religion, god of the sky and thunder, identified with the Greek Zeus. As Jupiter Optimus Maximus he was worshipped with Juno and Minerva in the great temple on the Capitoline Hill, begun under the last kings and, by tradition, dedicated in 509 BCE. Victorious generals ended their triumphs at his temple, and his cult spread throughout the Roman provinces.
