Kantarawaddy

19th century–1948 · 19th century

Kantarawaddy was the largest of the Karenni States in the hills of eastern Burma, ruled by a hereditary chief with the Shan title of saopha. Britain and the Burmese king recognised the independence of the Karenni states in 1875, and in 1892 their chiefs accepted British overlordship as feudatories. Kantarawaddy joined the Union of Burma in 1948 and is now part of Kayah State.
