Kargil War
The Kargil War was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999 in the Kargil district, then part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistani soldiers and militants had occupied high positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control; the Indian army and air force recaptured most of them in hard mountain fighting, and under US pressure Pakistan withdrew. It was the first war between the two states after both had tested nuclear weapons.
