Nagaland

1963 · 20th century

Nagaland is a state in north-eastern India, bordering Myanmar, with its capital at Kohima. Inhabited mainly by Naga peoples, it became a separate state in 1963 after an armed Naga nationalist movement led by Angami Zapu Phizo had demanded independence since the 1950s. Kohima was the scene of a decisive battle against the Japanese in 1944, and talks with Naga insurgent groups have continued since a ceasefire in 1997.
