Naganika

2nd–1st century BCE · 1st century BCE

Naganika was a queen of the Satavahana dynasty, the wife of Satakarni I, who ruled the western Deccan probably in the 2nd or 1st century BCE. Her long Prakrit inscription in a cave at the Naneghat pass records the Vedic sacrifices performed by the royal family, including horse sacrifices, and the lavish fees paid to Brahmins. It is one of the earliest important records of the dynasty, and coins bearing her name have also been found.
