Karl Thopia

d. 1388 · 14th century · Also known as Charles Thopia

Karl Thopia was an Albanian nobleman who held lands in central Albania between the Mat and Shkumbin rivers in the 14th century. Claiming Angevin descent through his mother, he seized Durrës from the Angevins in 1368 and styled himself Prince of Albania. His principality was among the strongest Albanian lordships until his death in 1388, after which Durrës passed to Venice.
