Berat
Berat is a city in south-central Albania on the Osum river, dominated by a hilltop citadel. Contested in the Middle Ages by Byzantines, Bulgarians, Angevins and Serbs, it withstood an Angevin siege in 1281. It was held by the Muzaka family before the Ottomans took it in 1417, and its Ottoman-era quarters of white houses form a World Heritage Site.
