Kingdom of Albania (medieval)
Origins
Charles I of Anjou, king of Sicily, acquired claims to the Albanian coast through the Treaty of Viterbo of 1267. In 1272 Albanian nobles and the city of Durrës accepted him, and he proclaimed himself King of Albania (Regnum Albaniae).
Rule and society
The kingdom was governed by Angevin captains-general and marshals from Durrës, with Albanian nobles granted titles and privileges. It served as a bridgehead for Charles's planned attack on Byzantium, but the Angevin army was defeated at the siege of Berat in 1281. Thereafter it was reduced mostly to Durrës and its surroundings, held by the princes of Achaea and Taranto.
Decline and legacy
Albanian lords and the Serbian Empire took much of the land in the 14th century. In 1368 Karl Thopia seized Durrës, ending Angevin rule and founding the Principality of Albania (medieval).
