Kennyo

1543–1592 · 16th century · Also known as Kennyo Kosa

Kennyo was the eleventh head priest of the Hongan-ji, the main temple of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist school, from 1554. From the fortified temple of Ishiyama Hongan-ji in Osaka he led the Ikko-ikki leagues in a long war against Oda Nobunaga from 1570. He surrendered the temple in 1580, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi later gave him land in Kyoto, where the Hongan-ji was re-established.
