Rennyo

1415–1499 · 15th century

Rennyo was the eighth head of the Hongan-ji, the main temple of the True Pure Land school of Japanese Buddhism. Through preaching tours and simple pastoral letters he spread the faith among farmers and townspeople, above all in the Hokuriku region, turning a small sect into a mass movement. He founded the Yamashina Hongan-ji near Kyoto and a temple at Ishiyama, later the sect's fortress.
