Rensselaerswyck

1630 · 17th century

Rensselaerswyck was the most successful patroonship of New Netherland, a vast estate around Fort Orange on both banks of the upper Hudson River, founded in 1630 by the Amsterdam merchant Kiliaen van Rensselaer. Tenants farmed its land and traded furs under the patroon's authority. Under English rule it became the Manor of Rensselaerswyck, and its manorial system lasted until the anti-rent struggles of the 1840s.
