Kingdom of Holland

1806–1810 · 19th century

The Kingdom of Holland was a monarchy created by Napoleon in 1806 to replace the Batavian Republic, with his brother Louis Bonaparte as king. Louis tried to protect Dutch interests, enforcing the Continental System only loosely, and he sent Herman Willem Daendels to govern Java. Displeased, Napoleon forced Louis to abdicate in 1810 and annexed the kingdom to the French Empire.
