Koppány

d. 997 · 10th century

Koppány was a Hungarian chieftain of the Árpád dynasty who ruled lands in Somogy, south of Lake Balaton. On Grand Prince Géza's death in 997 he claimed the succession by the old custom of seniority and sought to marry Géza's widow, but he was defeated near Veszprém by Géza's son Stephen, whose army included German knights. His body was quartered and displayed in four castles.
