Gisela of Bavaria

c. 985–1065 · 11th century

Gisela of Bavaria was the first queen of Hungary, wife of King Stephen I and sister of Emperor Henry II. Her marriage around 996 tied the new Christian Hungarian monarchy to the Ottonian Empire and brought Bavarian clergy and knights to Hungary. After Stephen's death in 1038 she was mistreated under King Peter Orseolo and returned to Bavaria, dying as abbess of Niedernburg in Passau.
