Stephen, King of England

c. 1092–1154 · 12th century · Also known as Stephen of Blois, King Stephen

Stephen was king of England from 1135 to 1154, a grandson of William the Conqueror through his mother Adela and a son of Stephen-Henry, Count of Blois. He became count of Boulogne by marrying its heiress Matilda and seized the English throne on the death of Henry I, against the claim of Empress Matilda. Their struggle, known as the Anarchy, ended when Stephen accepted her son Henry as his heir.
