Girsu
Girsu was a Sumerian city in southern Iraq, at the mound now called Telloh, and the religious and political capital of the state of Lagash for much of the 3rd millennium BCE. It was the cult centre of the god Ningirsu, whose temple Eninnu was rebuilt by Gudea around 2100 BCE. Excavations there from 1877 by Ernest de Sarzec first revealed Sumerian civilisation to modern scholars.
