Nippur

Nippur was an ancient city in southern Mesopotamia, the religious centre of Sumer and home of the temple of the god Enlil. Rulers sought recognition there to legitimise their kingship. Ur-Nammu of the Neo-Sumerian Empire consolidated control over it, and Hammurabi's Babylonian Empire later absorbed it with the rest of southern Mesopotamia.
