Ernest de Sarzec was a French diplomat and archaeologist who, as vice-consul at Basra, excavated the mound of Telloh in southern Iraq from 1877. His finds, including statues of Gudea, the Gudea Cylinders and the Stele of the Vultures, revealed the Sumerian civilisation of ancient Lagash and are now in the Louvre. He continued his excavations there until 1900.
