Kulottunga III

r. 1178–1218 · 12th century · Also known as Kulottunga Chola III

Kulottunga III was the last strong king of the Chola Empire, reigning from 1178 to 1218. He campaigned successfully against the Pandyas, sacking Madurai, and against the Hoysalas and the Sinhalese, and built the Kampaharesvara temple at Thirubuvanam. After his reign Chola power declined rapidly before the rising Pandyas and Hoysalas.
