Kulturkampf
The Kulturkampf was a political conflict in the 1870s between the government of Otto von Bismarck and the Catholic Church in the newly founded German Empire. Laws restricted the Church's role in education and appointments, reflecting suspicion of Catholic loyalties. The campaign largely failed, strengthening the Catholic Centre Party, and was gradually wound down.
