16th century · 16th century

Kunjali Marakkar was the title of the hereditary Muslim naval commanders of the Zamorin of Calicut in the 16th century. Four successive Kunjalis led fleets of fast, light vessels against the Portuguese along the Malabar Coast. The last, Kunjali IV, fell out with the Zamorin and was captured in a joint Portuguese and Calicut attack on his fort, then executed at Goa in 1600.
