fl. 747 · 8th century · Also known as King Kyriakos

Kyriakos was a king of Makuria in Nubia in the mid-8th century. According to the History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria, around 747 he marched into Upper Egypt with a large army to demand the release of the Coptic patriarch, who had been imprisoned by the Umayyad governor, and withdrew once the patriarch was freed. The episode shows Makuria's power and its close ties to the Coptic church.
