L'Escalade

1602 · 17th century

L'Escalade was a surprise night attack on Geneva on 11–12 December 1602 by troops of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, who tried to scale the city walls with ladders. The citizens beat off the assault, and the Treaty of Saint-Julien of 1603 recognised the city's independence from Savoy. The victory is still celebrated every December in Geneva.
