L'Anse aux Meadows

c. 1000 · 11th century

L'Anse aux Meadows is an archaeological site at the northern tip of Newfoundland, Canada, the only confirmed Norse settlement in North America. Discovered in 1960 by Helge Ingstad and excavated with Anne Stine Ingstad, it contained the remains of turf buildings occupied briefly around 1000; tree-ring evidence points to activity in 1021. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
