Lake Bolsena

Lake Bolsena is a crater lake in northern Lazio, Italy, the largest lake of volcanic origin in Europe. In Etruscan times its shores belonged to the territory of Volsinii, and the federal sanctuary of the Etruscans, the Fanum Voltumnae, lay nearby. In the Middle Ages the commune of Orvieto extended its rule towards it, and the Farnese Duchy of Castro later covered the lands between the lake and the Tyrrhenian coast.
