Lạng Sơn

Also known as Lang Son

Lạng Sơn is a city and province in north-eastern Vietnam on the main road and railway to China, near the Friendship Pass border crossing. For centuries it guarded the route of invasions from the north. In the Sino-Vietnamese War of 1979 Chinese forces captured and largely destroyed the city before withdrawing, and it later became a busy centre of cross-border trade.
