Langalibalele

c. 1814–1889 · 19th century

Langalibalele was chief of the Hlubi, a Nguni people of Natal, and was renowned as a rainmaker. In 1873 he refused to have the guns his men had earned at the diamond fields registered, and the Natal government treated this as rebellion, broke up the Hlubi location and exiled him to Robben Island. The affair caused controversy in Britain, and he was allowed to return to Natal in 1887.
