Langdarma

died c. 842 · 9th century · Also known as Udumtsen, Darma Udumtsen, Glang Darma

Langdarma, also called Udumtsen, was the last emperor of a united Tibet, succeeding his murdered brother Ralpachen in 838. Later Buddhist histories portray him as a persecutor of Buddhism assassinated by the monk Lhalung Palgyi Dorje, traditionally in 842; modern historians accept that he withdrew state support from the monasteries. After his death rival claimants divided the court and the empire broke apart.
