Robben Island

Robben Island is a small island in Table Bay off Cape Town, South Africa. From the 17th century it was used to banish and imprison opponents of colonial rule, and under apartheid it held political prisoners, among them Nelson Mandela, who spent eighteen of his twenty-seven years in prison there. It is now a museum and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999.
