Laredo

1755 · 18th century

Laredo is a city on the north bank of the Rio Grande in Texas, facing Nuevo Laredo in Mexico. It was founded in 1755 by Tomás Sánchez as part of José de Escandón's colonisation of Nuevo Santander, and in 1840 it was the claimed seat of the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande. Today it is one of the busiest land ports on the border between the United States and Mexico.
