Larut
Larut is a district of northern Perak, Malaysia, centred on the town of Taiping. Rich tin deposits found there in the mid-19th century drew thousands of Chinese miners, and rivalry between Chinese secret societies over the mines led to the Larut Wars of the 1860s and early 1870s. These disorders were a main reason for British intervention in Perak under the Pangkor Treaty of 1874.
