Pangkor Treaty of 1874
The Pangkor Treaty of 1874 was signed in January 1874 off the island of Pangkor between the British governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Andrew Clarke, and Malay chiefs of Perak. It recognised Raja Abdullah as sultan and obliged him to accept a British Resident, whose advice had to be followed in all matters except Malay religion and custom. It began the British residential system in the Malay states.
