Le Puy-en-Velay
Le Puy-en-Velay is a town in the Massif Central of southern France, capital of the Haute-Loire department, built among volcanic pinnacles. As Anicium it replaced Ruessium as the seat of the bishops of the Velay in late antiquity. Its cathedral with a venerated Black Virgin made it a major pilgrimage centre, and it is the starting point of the Via Podiensis to Santiago de Compostela. It is also known for lace-making.
