Life of Antony

c. 360 · 4th century

The Life of Antony is a biography of the Egyptian hermit Anthony the Great, written in Greek by Athanasius of Alexandria soon after Anthony's death in 356. It describes his withdrawal into the desert, his struggles with demons and his holiness. Quickly translated into Latin, it spread the ideal of monastic life across the Christian West and is mentioned by Augustine as a spur to his conversion.
