Lincoln, England
Lincoln is a cathedral city in the East Midlands of England, on the River Witham. It began as the Roman legionary fortress of Lindum, which became a colonia for veterans, later gave its name to the Anglian kingdom of Lindsey and was one of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw. Its Norman castle and cathedral, begun in 1072, dominate the hilltop, and two battles were fought there, in 1141 and 1217.
