Løgting

Also known as Faroese Parliament

The Løgting is the parliament of the Faroe Islands. It descends from the Alting, the assembly of free men that met at Tinganes in Tórshavn from the Viking Age and is counted among the oldest parliamentary bodies in the world. Under Norwegian and then Danish rule it became mainly a law court and was abolished in 1816, but it was restored in 1852 and gained legislative powers under the Home Rule Act of 1948.
